High competition, tight turn arounds, specific client needs, and other stipulations keep the environment of screen printing a rather demanding one. Screen printing companies offer screen printing services to brands of all sizes, but it leaves for a rather wide gulf. For better or worse, entering the tr-shirt business (and, by extension, other fabric and product screen printing) is quite easy. An aspiring designer with a knack for digital drawing may actually seize on the opportunity. Website platforms make creating a web presence manageable, and anything but meandering. T-shirt companies have a few immediate obstacles that may be in there way, but all of these can be overcome in time.

What does all this say about the screen printing industry? This obvious subset of the fabric industry is in a weird place. There are the means to create t-shirt companies essentially overnight. That is not the hard part. As stated, web platforms, Photoshop and a free trial, and a connection to the web means that Joe, Suzie, and Bill can all make their own t-shirt company. The problem this creates for screen printers is the gulf of potential clients. How do they know who to work with? What will lead to a major brand and what will lead to a 24 minimum order for a kid in his basement?

The Wikipedia citation covers the changing needs of screen printing specialists. They need to be able to spot a company that has legs and one that is built with a two-week plan in mind or little more than “make cool shirts, man.” In short, screen printing clients can very likely be a dime-a-dozen. They are everywhere. Screen printers who have the capacity to work with many clients may want to consider proper due diligence on who they want to work with. A 24 minimum order, for example, is to cover the expense of the print and ink combinations. It makes little sense to use these materials for, say, one shirt. Too many of these minimum orders without a follow-up order could mean a whole lot of micro-making with only a marginal return., as a platform, helps in the client organization.
